Confidential Treatment for Aviation Careers

Bright Paths Recovery provides confidential rehab for pilots and flight crew in a 12-bed private home in Los Angeles: physician-led medical detox and residential treatment, your phone and laptop in hand, records that move only where you direct them, and a clinical team that understands exactly how much a flying career asks of the person holding it.

The Pressure Profile

A Career Calibrated in Time Zones Lands Hard on the Body

Flying compresses a unique set of pressures into one profession: circadian disruption that never fully repays its debt, layover cultures where the hotel bar is the crew room, months of maximum vigilance punctuated by empty calendar, and a level of medical scrutiny attached to the career that makes admitting any struggle feel like handing over the keys. Pilots are selected and trained for composure, and composure is precisely the skill that hides a growing dependence from everyone, sometimes including the pilot.

The substances follow the schedule: alcohol to land after a trip, sleep aids to force rest against a body clock three time zones behind, stimulants to make the early show time. County data gives the backdrop, alcohol and drug related emergency visits across Los Angeles County rose 18 percent since 2020 to 153,276LA County DPH in 2024, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism documents how reliably untreated alcohol problems compoundNIAAA. None of it cares how good your instrument scan is.

Confidentiality, Built Not Promised

Confidentiality When the Stakes Are the Career Itself

No profession we serve fears exposure more, so the structure answers first: an unmarked 12-bed residence with no facility footprint, a census small enough to fit around one table, and records governed by 42 CFR Part 2, the federal confidentiality standard for substance use treatment that requires your specific written consent for nearly every disclosure. Bright Paths has no reporting relationship with any employer, airline, or authority. Who learns anything, and when, and in what words, are decisions that stay in your hands and the hands of the advisors you choose.

Certification & Your Advisors

Our Lane, Stated Exactly: We Treat; Your Advisors Advise

Aviation careers operate under strict medical certification rules, and decisions about certification, disclosure, and returning to the flight deck are consequential enough that they belong with the right advisors: an aviation medical examiner you trust, counsel experienced in aviation medical certification matters, and, where applicable, your union’s resources. We are deliberate about our boundaries here. Bright Paths is a treatment program. We do not advise on certification, we do not make return-to-duty determinations, and we will never pretend otherwise, because a treatment program that freelances on your certificate is a hazard, not a help.

What we do, at your direction only, is the part that has to be true before any of those conversations go well: physician-led detox, residential treatment with real clinical depth, sleep and circadian repair that a flying body genuinely needs, and documentation, thorough, accurate, and released only with your written consent, that your advisors can put to work. Pilots plan contingencies for a living; think of treatment as securing the aircraft first, then flying the procedure with the right crew.

The Policy That Changes the Decision

You Keep Your Phone and Your Laptop

The number one question professionals ask us, before cost, before length of stay, is whether treatment means going dark. Here it does not. Clients keep their phones and laptops at Bright Paths Recovery. The clinical day comes first and we help you set boundaries that protect it, but you stay appropriately connected to the people and responsibilities that need you. Same-day admissions mean the decision and the arrival can share a date, a stay runs about 35 days, and if you are weighing time away from work, federal job-protection rules may apply: our plain-language guide to FMLA and rehab covers what most employees never get told.

The Program

Treatment Built Around a Checklist Mind

Pilots tend to love the structure here on sight: a briefed day, a small crew, measurable progress, and a clinical team that respects procedure. The clinical spine is one continuum in one home: medically supervised detox with 24/7 physician oversight and short-term, non-maintenance medication support, then residential inpatient treatment structured around daily clinical groups, one-on-one therapy, CBT, DBT, motivational enhancement, and relapse prevention, and after discharge, an alumni network with weekly proactive check-ins. Most stays run 28 to 40 days, about 35 typically. Our stated goal is to see every client only one time.

The Home

A Private Home Built to a Professional's Standard

Twelve beds in a fully remodeled private residence: a private chef cooking restaurant-grade meals daily, a gym with boxing and cardio equipment, a basketball court, a green grounding area, streaming in every room, three stocked kitchens, and a private therapy room. Weekend outings, the ocean, museums, escape rooms, put recovery into practice in the real world. It photographs like a home because it is one.

Straight Answers

What Pilots Ask Us

1

Is There a Confidential Rehab for Pilots?

Yes: a 12-bed unmarked private home in Los Angeles where records move only with your written consent under federal confidentiality law, the census is twelve, and no employer, airline, or authority hears from us. Confidentiality here is architecture, not a promise, and it is the reason pilots and crew choose a home like this over any facility with a parking lot.

2

What Happens to My Flying Career If I Get Treatment?

That question deserves better than a treatment center’s opinion, and we will not hand you one. Certification and return-to-duty decisions belong with your aviation medical examiner, counsel experienced in aviation medical matters, and your union resources where applicable. What we contribute is the foundation those decisions rest on: real treatment, honest clinical documentation released at your direction, and a recovery solid enough to be worth advocating for.

3

How Does Detox Work for a Body That Lives Across Time Zones?

Under physician oversight, with the circadian wreckage treated as a first-order clinical problem rather than a side note. Sleep architecture repair, short-term and non-maintenance medication support where appropriate, and 24/7 monitoring through the acute days. Crews are often startled by how much of what they medicated was, underneath, a decade of scheduled jet lag.

For the People Around Them

For the Spouse, Crewmate, or Friend Who Flies With the Worry

Aviation households and crews notice long before anyone official does: the landing drink that moved earlier in the day, the sleep aids that stopped being occasional, the composure that now takes visible effort. If you are the one carrying that observation, understand why the direct approach so often fails here: a pilot hears any mention of their struggle as a threat to the certificate, and the conversation shuts down in self-defense.

What works is arriving with the fear already answered: a confidential program identified, benefits verified without a name attached, and a clear story about who decides what, which is the pilot and their own advisors, never us. Call us first and alone; we will help you build that approach before you need it, and the inquiry itself stays confidential.

Rehab for Pilots: Frequently Asked Questions

No. We hold no reporting relationship with any airline, employer, or aviation authority, and federal confidentiality law under 42 CFR Part 2 requires your written consent before records move anywhere. Disclosure decisions are yours, made with your own advisors.

An aviation medical examiner you trust, counsel experienced in aviation medical certification matters, and your union’s resources if you have them. We are glad to coordinate with the team you assemble and to provide documentation at your direction; we do not play any of those roles ourselves.

Yes, throughout. The clinical day comes first and boundaries protect it, but your family, your advisors, and anyone else you choose stay reachable on your schedule, not a facility’s.

Alcohol threaded through layover culture, sleep medications recruited against the body clock, and stimulants for the early report times, often in combination. Detox is physician-directed and treats the stack as a stack.

Detox and residential care together run 28 to 40 days, about 35 typically, and same-day admission means an unexpected window can become a start date. Timing strategy around your employment situation belongs with your advisors; the clinical calendar we keep honest.

An unmarked residence on a quiet street, no signage, twelve clients, and no reason for anyone from your world to pass by. Arrival logistics are planned with admissions; more than one client has been door to door without ever standing anywhere public.

Yes. Family therapy runs weekly on site for those who can drive in, your phone keeps daily contact alive across any time zone, and our admissions team helps far-flung families plan visit logistics around trips and bases.

A private app that works from any layover, a weekly alumni call you can join from a hotel room, and proactive weekly check-ins that flag drift early. The network is built for people whose schedules never sit still, because most of ours never do.
